A Texas Court ruled in a 3-year long case regarding Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski on accusations of misleading patients and being a threat to public health. Prosecution was seeking $360,000 in damages, restitution to a patient, and public reprimanding with the ability to strip Dr. Burzynski of his Medical License. The court ruled that a $60,000 fine would be given, and that much more lenient measures would be taken as a means to supervise his future actions.

Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski specializes in ‘alternative’ Cancer treatments—particularly a type of therapy utilizing natural peptides and amino acid compounds known as Antineoplastons. In the United States, this is not an FDA-approved means of treating Cancer, although other countries seem to have acknowledged it’s potential. This therapy was pioneered by Dr. Burzynski in the late 1970’s and he feels that it is the answer to addressing modern Cancer issues.

From MyStatesman.com:

Burzynski’s attorneys called the decision a win.

“It means that he gets to continue medicine. He gets to continue to save lives,” attorney Gregory Myers said.

Burzynski, a native of Poland, performed research at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in the late 1970s, and, in 1993, won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to perform a clinical trial of antineoplastons, a drug he says he developed, as a treatment for cancer. Although Burzynski said it cures cancer, the National Cancer Institute says antineoplastons aren’t approved by the FDA for the prevention or treatment of any disease.

Burzynski uses antineoplastons as a method of treatment at his Houston clinic, where 95 percent of his cancer patients are terminally ill.

“We try to do our best to provide excellent care for our patients. They rely on our treatment to live,” Burzynski told the American-Statesman. He accused the Texas Medical Board of harassing him and covering up the cure for cancer.

Many of his supporters showed up Friday, attesting to the life-saving treatment they and their loved ones received from Burzynski.

Sophia Gettino, 21, flew from New York to Austin to attend Friday’s hearing. Doctors found a brain tumor in her when she was 10 months old, and, although she tried other more conventional treatments, nothing worked until she started seeing Burzynski, she said.

“I’ve been in remission since I was 7 years old, and I’m here today” because of Burzynski, Gettino said.

Cancer is a horribly wide-spread disease that seems to plague modern lifestyles moreso every year. It’s important to recognize there are extremely powerful interests at play on the legislative side of things regarding what someone can legally say about treating Cancer. Alternative methods of treating Cancer have the full weight of the United States Government against them in pursuing their research, and often wind up in court battles such as Dr. Burzynski. It’s not unreasonable to regard this as justified, as there certainly would be snake-oil salesman ‘curing’ Cancer with colored water without regulatory oversight. Where things fall short in my opinion is the deeply-rooted Pharmaceutical lobby in the United States’ legislative process. That’s an entirely other discussion, but I’ll leave you with one aspect of it’s effect to consider. One study conducted among Cancer patients found that for a 5 year survival period—Chemotherapy was only successful 2.1% of the time. These are the numbers that are used to ultimately justify the pursuit of Doctors such as Dr. Burzynski in their endeavors to discover new methods of addressing Cancer.
