We are living in a very unique time in human history. Life expectancy is at an all-time high, physical disease is at an all-time low, and we have everything we could ever dream of at the touch of our fingertips. But we are so incredibly unhappy.
Despite living a life of abundance, many are struggling to keep up with the daily grind. Struggling to manage the accumulation of stress that comes with simply trying to get by on a weekly basis. Hell, it is currently estimated that over 50 million American adults are suffering from depression and anxiety — and it is only getting worse.
Ways to Support Mental Health
In short, this stress is destroying our mental health. As a result, we need to take action and actively seek out ways to improve our mental health for good. Which is exactly what I am doing with this article. Below you’ll find five ways in which technology and/or natural therapies can be used to help support optimal mental health.
For the better part of a millennium, ancient humans worshipped the sun. It was considered the source of all life, thought to promote health, vitality, and longevity.
I know, I know — sounds a bit silly, right?
But what if it’s not.
Recent research has demonstrated that when you are exposed to direct sunlight, it interacts with your body at a cellular level. This, in turn, increases the secretion of “feel good” hormones throughout your body.
As a result, sunlight has been shown to boost both physical and mental health.
Not so silly now, is?
But the hard part comes with getting into the sun often enough.
Which is why I wanted to discuss the importance of light therapy.
Light therapy has you standing next to a device known as a “light therapy box” for around an hour per day. Interestingly, this box emits a light you to light that is exactly the same as sunlight — in which it has the same impact on your body.
With this in mind, light therapy has been shown to stave off depression and anxiety, and increase emotional wellness.
So get into some light and capitalize on the power of the sun.
4Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
TMS is a treatment that has been around since the 1980s, where it was often used to treat things like psychosis and schizophrenia.
However, over the last decade, it has become an increasingly popular treatment for mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety — where it has shown to be extremely effective, I might add.
When you undertake a session of TMS, an electromagnetic pad is placed on your forehead. This pad then sends magnetic pulses into your brain, where it activates those cells which manage your mood and emotional wellbeing.
While this may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, I can assure you that it is real.
Oh, and I can assure you that TMS is effective for depression.
By increasing the activity of these cells, TMS has been shown to enhance your brain’s function. This leads to lasting improvements in mood and emotional wellbeing, and the subsequent increase in your mental health.
You all know that what you eat is important for your physical health — but did you know it is important for your mental health too?
Well, it is — and damn important at that.
Research has shown time and time again that what you eat can have severe implications on your mental state.
If you eat a diet that is full of junk foods, refined carbohydrates, and sugars, then your risk of depression and anxiety increases. Similarly, if you consume a lot of alcohol, then you can expect to see a huge decline in your mental health.
However, if you eat a lot of whole grains, beans, eggs, cheese, yogurt, green leafy vegetables, fish, poultry, and red meat, then you will provide your brain with all the nutrients it needs to function effectively.
And the result? A vast improvement in mental health.
With this in mind, it should be obvious as to why those who eat a Mediterranean diet tend to have an extremely low risk of depression and anxiety.
Electromagnetic therapy (also known as “Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy”) is a unique treatment first used in the 1950s to improve bone healing.
However, over the last few years, it has made a splash in the industry for its ability to impact mental health.
In short, this therapy uses different kinds of magnets placed all over your body to enhance the function of your cells. This can increase the health of your nervous system, while also balancing your hormones.
As a result, it has been shown to have a significant impact on the health of your brain. Over time this can lead to lasting improvements in happiness and emotional wellbeing, and can even help treat depression
As a bonus, it is also extremely easy to use.
Because technology has improved by such a large amount over the last few years, you can now buy electromagnetic therapy mats that contain several flat spiral coils. You then simply turn on the mat and lie down for 20-30 minutes per day.
Simple and effective.
Last but not least, I wanted to touch on the importance of supplements.
It is well established that your body requires an adequate number of key nutrients to function effectively. To put it simply, if you are lacking in any of these nutrients, then your health suffers.
And this holds especially true for mental health.
As such, by supplementing with these key nutrients, you can be sure that your body (and your brain) has everything you need to function on a daily basis. And this can have a massive impact on your mental state.
Some of the most effective natural supplements for mental health include:
Additionally, there is also some research suggesting that a unique supplement called SAMe may have benefits.
Short for “S-adenosyl-L-methionine”, SAMe is a compound found naturally occurring within your body. This compound helps produce important brain hormones and plays a role in the maintenance of your brain cells.
Subsequently, supplementing with a synthetic version of SAMe (remember, it is normally made within the human body) has been shown to cause significant improvements in a number of mental health disorders — including both depression and anxiety.
This makes it another great option—just make sure you buy from a quality supplement brand.
Despite living in one of the most affluent times in human history, our happiness is at an all-time low. We are literally stressed out of our brains, and it is having a huge impact on our mental health.
Really, is there any wonder why depression and anxiety have become so common?
Fortunately, there are certain steps you can take to improve your mental health for good — so what are you waiting for?
